It's Bonfire Night! Remember, remember the 5th of November...

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to blow up England’s King James I and the Parliament on November 5, 1605.

The plot was organized by Robert Catesby in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English government. Catesby and others hoped to replace the country’s Protestant government with Catholic leadership.

Around midnight on November 4, 1605, one of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was discovered in the cellar of the Parliament building with barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes and other men involved in the plot were tried and executed for treason.

Every November 5, the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by burning Fawkes in effigy at one of the multiple fireworks displays around the country or by having their own party in their back gardens. Either way, they will be certainly snacking on hot dogs, hamburgers, jacket potatoes and toffee apples.

¡Es la Noche de las Hogueras! Recuerda, recuerda el 5 de noviembre...

El complot de la pólvora fue un intento fallido de hacer volar por los aires al rey Jacobo I de Inglaterra y al Parlamento el 5 de noviembre de 1605.

El complot fue organizado por Robert Catesby para acabar con la persecución de los católicos romanos por parte del gobierno inglés. Catesby y otros esperaban sustituir el gobierno protestante del país por un liderazgo católico.

Alrededor de la medianoche del 4 de noviembre de 1605, uno de los conspiradores, Guy Fawkes, fue descubierto en el sótano del edificio del Parlamento con barriles de pólvora. Fawkes y otros hombres implicados en la conspiración fueron juzgados y ejecutados por traición.

💥Cada 5 de noviembre, los británicos celebran el Día de Guy Fawkes quemándolo en efigie en uno de los múltiples espectáculos pirotécnicos que se organizan por todo el país o celebrando su propia fiesta en el jardín de su casa. En cualquiera de los dos casos, no faltan los perritos calientes, las hamburguesas, las patatas fritas y las manzanas de caramelo.

Movember

 

Welcome November, although now it is named Movember, the month where your male friends show up baby-faced on Nov.1 and look like western-movie villains by Thanksgiving.

It all started in 1999 in Australia when a group of young men decided that the middle of summer was a fantastic time to grow a beard . They decided that growing facial hair (moustache, beard, goatee or whatever) for an entire month would be an effective way to support men’s issues. In keeping with the theme of “moustaches”, the month was named “Mo-vember”.

While it started out just focusing on raising awareness for prostate cancer and depression, it would soon grow to include all men’s health issues. Did you know about that?

Bienvenido, noviembre, aunque ahora se llame Movember; el mes en el que tus amigos aparecen con cara de niño el 1 de noviembre y parecen villanos de película del oeste en Acción de Gracias.

Todo empezó en 1999 en Australia, cuando un grupo de jóvenes decidió que mediados de verano era un momento fantástico para dejarse barba. Decidieron que dejarse crecer el vello facial (bigote, barba, perilla o lo que fuera) durante todo un mes sería una forma eficaz de apoyar los problemas de los hombres. En consonancia con el tema de los "bigotes", el mes recibió el nombre de "Moviembre".

Aunque al principio se centró en la concienciación sobre el cáncer de próstata y la depresión, pronto se extendió a todos los temas relacionados con la salud masculina. ¿Conocías este movimiento?

 What a bright and colourful week we’ve had! We have learnt all about Diwali, rangoli design workshop included, with our fantastic language assistant @anisha__luz. Thanks for showing how magical your country is!
